This is an on-going beginning level class working on close-embrace club-style Tango, otherwise known as "Milonguero-style" Tango. Emphasis is on walking technique, finding a comfortable embrace, lead & follow, rhythm & musicality and simple basic movements that can get you dancing out in the "milongas" (tango dance events) and having fun in a short amount of time. This is a relaxed class where you can begin to explore, practice, and play with the foundational elements of the dance. $13/class. It's a good idea to call, in advance, if you're coming for the first time or haven't been for a while (982-5833).

Milonguero Tango Level II at 2925 Rufina Street
Wednesdays: 7:30-8:30pm
Instructor: Liz Haight
This is an ongoing weekly class for those who have either taken some of my level I classes and feel really comfortable with the basics or for those who have already had previous tango experience. This is a popular class, where we work on intermediate level "milonguero" elements. Our main aim is to provide you with fun material that is practical, i.e. "milonga-friendly", as well as work on technique that is both functional and beautiful. There is special attention to the basics - quality of connection, the embrace, the walk, lightness and response for the women, groundedness and balance for everyone. This is a great place for you to explore your own creativity and musicality in the dance. $13/class or you can use Luren's class card if you are one of her students. I also recommend that you call me if you are coming for the first time (982-5833).

Aug 17, 2008
The idea is to prepare our NM community for the Denver Tango Festival on Labor Day. This festival is generally oriented toward Milonguero-style social dancing with tangueros/as coming from all over the country where dancing among many people using a small amount of space is the norm. So, our overriding focus will be on milonga-friendly figures that facilitate dancing in small spaces and (need I say?) navigation! We also will be focusing, as usual, on deepening connection with our partners throughout the dance. Toward that end we will be offering two 1 1/2 hour classes:
1:45 - 3:15 - Milonguero Turns:
Stable and compact, these on-body turns are built for the crowded
dance floors of Buenos Aires. We will work on deepening basic turn technique while working
on turns in crossed and parallel systems.
3:30 - 5:00 - Dancing in Place - This class is aimed to expand useful vocabulary and strengthen skills needed
for dancing in the milongas. We will work on rotating movements, vaivens, integrating the
turns and linking elements together.
These classes will be open to all dancers with 3 months or more experience and will have progressive levels of instruction from simple to more complex elements according to ability. We ask that beginners come with partners so that all dancers can explore elements and ideas at their level. Intermediate dancers will rotate (unless not wanting to!).
The workshop will be held in Albuquerque at the Lloyd Shaw Dance Center, 5506 Coal SE (not the one-way Coal). Located two blocks south of Central; 2nd block east of San Mateo, between Central & Zuni. Map link at http://abqtango.org/mapPage.html
Please arrive 15 minutes early to register before class begins. $15/class. And, if you can, would you please email me in advance and let me know if you plan to come so I have an idea of how many people may attend.
If you have any questions about the workshop, please feel free to call me, Liz, after August 2nd at 505-982-5833.
The workshop will be followed by two milongas, Body in Santa Fe and Kelly's in Albuquerque. We recommend going to either of these milongas to integrate and cement in what you've learned!
9th annual Denver Labor Day Milonguero Tango Festival
moves to ALBUQUERQUE this year!
August 27, 2008 - September 1, 2008!
A Tango festival "By Dancers; For Dancers" features non-stop parties for all tango dancers who love the social style of tango popular in the milongas of Buenos Aires: close, subtle & romantic. The milongas will feature some of the top DJs in the country. The teachers are known as community builders and entertainers. Attendance will be around 450-500, so Buenos Aires style floorcraft will be essential. The main venue will be the Albuquerque Hilton, w/ other venues for an outdoor milonga & Friday night.
